The secret to intentionally making time for fitness is simple: find a workout that you truly enjoy.

There is no better place to do so than the Northbrook Park District’s state-of-the-art Techny Prairie Activity Center (TPAC), which offers tons of options for people of all ages and fitness levels. There is no better time to join than January, when new members can take advantage of a $0 enrollment fee special.

“From flexibility to strength to stress management, the best thing you can do for yourself is find an exercise program you enjoy,” Fitness Supervisor Julie Lappas said. “The more joy and happiness you find in movement and health, the more likely you are to stay with it.”

TPAC features a 6,000-square-foot fitness floor with more than 80 pieces of strength and cardio equipment, most with personal viewing screens for TV and internet to keep you entertained while working out. There are modern group fitness studios; an 8-laps-per-mile indoor track with a stretching area; and a multipurpose gymnasium with drop-in times for open pickleball, volleyball and basketball. In summer, membership includes aqua fitness classes and lap swimming/water walking at Meadowhill Aquatic Center and the Sports Center Pool.

TPAC offers personal training, along with a wide variety of group fitness classes: cardio, interval training, dance fitness, low impact, yoga, mat Pilates, indoor cycling and many more. Classes also can be attended virtually, from the comfort of your home, both on livestream and on demand.

There are also sessions of weekly specialty classes, such as “Strong Moms,” which will help you build your post-baby strength starting Jan. 9; “Parent-Tot Yoga,” for a chance at having fun and practicing mindfulness with your child starting Jan. 19; and multiple sessions of “Parkinson’s Wellness,” led by a certified instructor to help people with Parkinson’s disease increase their stability and endurance.

Techny Prairie Activity Center Manager Shawn Bernaky said staff members deeply value making everyone feel welcomed and supported in achieving their fitness goals. “We hope people will choose TPAC to work on their New Year’s resolutions in 2024, because we know that having steady support is one of the best ways to ensure success,” he said.

TPAC is located at 180 Anets Drive, Northbrook. Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Members get three complimentary guest passes per year, and additional household members receive two guest passes each. Members also receive three 30-minute Strong Start sessions with a personal trainer to get their workouts underway.

TPAC also offers Kids’ Corner Childcare while a parent or caregiver is working out. With large windows, colorful furnishings and caring staff members, this fun space is dedicated to children ages 3 months and older. Members receive discounted rates for this service, and swipe cards offer additional savings.

Typically, membership enrollment fees range from $75 for adults ages 18 and up, and $45 for seniors and youths. Add-on memberships typically require a $35 enrollment fee, which also will be waived in January.
